Start here: choosing your first freeze dryer

Member feb00a · Sep 30, 2026

Getting asked this a lot, so here's a running FAQ instead of answering it one-on-one each time. Home units (Harvest Right and similar) run roughly $2,500–$4,000 depending on chamber size (small/medium/large), plus oil or oil-free pump options. The chamber size mostly determines how much you can run per batch, not how "good" the machine is — a small chamber freeze-dries food just as well, it just takes more batches to hit volume. If you're testing the waters (making stuff for your own family, giving as gifts, seeing if you even like the process), a small or medium unit is plenty. If you're already thinking about selling regularly, size up sooner rather than later — running a small chamber at commercial volume gets old fast. What's actually driven your decision so far — budget, space, or how much you think you'll produce? Drop your situation below and others can weigh in.
